Menu Items and Sub-menu items can be along the top of your page, along the bottom or in various left or right hand modules of your site depending on your template.  In the example below, Menu items are:   Home, Hairballs and  Contact Matthew.

Sub-menu items are:  Matthew's Pet Peeves, Home Alone and Links to Tabby Cats.  

Menu items must link to something in order to display content of any kind.  That is why.....

To create menu items, you must first create a content or static content item.  To see how to create a content item,  go to:  Tutorials > Basic Features >  Create a Static Content page and Menu item or Creating a Content Item

You will notice that you can create  a menu item link directly from the place where you create the content item,  by clicking on the Link to Menu tab to the right of the text box.

Once you have linked your content to a menu item, you can then decide if you want to change your menu item from a parent item to a sub-menu item.

To change the menu item to a sub-menu item, click on Menu > Main Menu.

Click on the menu item you would like to become a sub-item. (I chose 'hairballs in the example below).

Now you are in the Edit Menu Item screen.  In the Parent Item box,change the Parent Item from Top to whatever you would like the parent item to be by selecting it. (In the example, I have chosen Home to be the parent of the menu item, Hair Balls)

Click the Save button.

Go to the front end of your site and refresh the page, to see your changes. In the example.  'Hair Balls' is now a submenu item under the parent item, 'Home'.
