Modules appear on the left or right hand side of your site as well as various other places depending on your template layout.  The events calendar and front end login box are in modules on your preview site.  

You can create a new module for a newsflash or a special announcement.

Go to:   Modules > Site Modules

Click New.

Type in a title for your module.

Choose position:    Note:  Choose the position applicable to your template.  If your template does not have right side modules, the module will not show if you choose right position. It may take a bit of trial and error to find the correct position you want the module to appear in.  

In the text box below, type in the content of your module or insert an image.  Since module spaces are not large, restrict the sizes of images to approx. 175 pixels wide and limit the number of words in the text.
